The Collection Desk

GET PAID FOR THE SONG AND THE RECORDING.

Societies first. Then one distributor. Publishing admin is optional and does not replace your PRO. Nothing here is legal advice. Confirm every fee on the official site before you pay anyone.

Checked September 2026. ASCAP, BMI, The MLC, SoundExchange, HFA, and copyright.gov do not get affiliate links — ever. Some later tools might. Empty affiliate slots stay official URLs until a real program is approved. I have not locked a public distributor, so nothing here is a ranking.

Two copyrights

The composition

The song

Melody and lyrics. Writer + publisher share. Collected by a PRO (performances) and The MLC (U.S. digital mechanicals).

The recording

The master

The file you upload. Featured artist + owner. Collected by your distributor (streams/downloads) and SoundExchange (non-interactive digital radio / sat).

Four collectors

01

Distributor

Gets the recording onto Spotify, Apple, YouTube Music, Amazon. Pays recording streaming/download money. Pick one later.

02

PRO

Pays when the composition is performed — radio, venues, TV, many digital plays. Join one U.S. PRO as a writer.

03

The MLC

Pays U.S. digital mechanicals on the composition (interactive streams + downloads). Free. Not optional if you write.

04

SoundExchange

Pays digital performance on the recording for non-interactive services. Artist account + owner account if you own the master.

Do this first

  1. Own the work, or have the splits in writing.
  2. Join one U.S. PRO as a writer. Add a publisher entity if you self-publish.
  3. Register every finished song at that PRO. Spelling and splits matter.
  4. Join The MLC and match those same songs.
  5. Join SoundExchange as featured artist, and as owner if you own the master.
  6. When you pick a distributor (pass B), get ISRCs and push those IDs back into the other accounts.
  7. Optional: publishing admin. It does not replace your PRO.
  8. Optional: HFA if you need physical / some download licensing.
  9. Register the finished work at copyright.gov when you care about the paper.
